Low Beam Bulb Failure Triggered by Aftermarket Xenons

To those that have the message ‘low beam bulb failure’ (this from memory) after installing HID headlights with a ballast.

I bought a Volvo XC70 2003 to replace the 98V70 which was bought by my friends wife and still going strong. It shows you that picking your login could be subject to change, never thought that I would ‘move up’. For those interested: We like the 03, gets better gas mileage than the 98 which got 25 MPG, the XC70 gets 26 give or take! I can’t believe it and of course love it!

low beam bulb failure

When I purchased the car the previous owner just put Xenon headlights in this car which has the ballasts to increase the Voltage for the light bulbs. I couldn’t get passed the warning light, my wife wasn’t too worried about it.

“Do you mean aftermarket xenon or the factory Volvo xenon headlights? Our ’04xc70 came with xenon headlights, the headlights are programmed into the ECU. I see what you did, that looks ghetto under the hood like that but to each there own. Your try to grip the ECU into thinking there’s the proper amount of amperage/resistance.”

I have a similar problem, passenger side “low beam” failure.
There seems to be an “open” somewhere inside the headlamp assembly.
I have voltage on the wire and connector leading to the HL assy but zero on the
connector that attaches to the HL bulb. I intend to remove the HL assy. Continuity check
from main connector to bulb connector and either replace the harness if it’s available, repair the open by splicing, or jigger a bypass around the wire as last resort. The schematics available on the forum were extremely helpful for color coding and connector location.
