S60 Front End Clunking

Experiencing S60 Front End Clunking?

Swaybar links and tie rod end links are notorious issues on S60‘s. I would start with the swaybar links if when the vehicle is off the ground there is any vertical movement when you grab hold, the PAIR need replaced. Secondly the tie rod end links go bad often… While you still have the vehicle in the air, you rock your tire up and down and front and back you see much movement they need replaced as a pair. Both are fairly easy repairs, the first is a heck of a lot easier if you have access to an impact wrench. If you do they will break free a BUNCH easier.

Bonus! More About The Volvo S60

The Volvo S60 is a compact luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000 and is now in its third generation.

The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a sports version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.

The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60. The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America’s first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The U.S. became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

We had a clunking or knock sound in my wife’s ’05 S60. I was worried about sway bars and struts and even trans/axles etc. Turns out it was the bushings on the Upper Torque Rod, the bar at the back of the engine compartment that helps to control torque movement. Easy fix, parts about $50 for both sides. Hope this helps.

I have a 04 s60 AWD with the 17inch wheels does anyone have problems with the front wheels rubbing when you turn the wheel tigh from left to right..
