Why not save some money on a water pump replacement on the Volvo 3.2 liter?
Let’s look at an actual case, Jerry V, a new MVS Forums member with a 2007 XC90 3.2, a very common Volvo model/engine.
Replacing the drive belt, pulleys, and alternator decoupler after the idler pulley bearings catastrophically failed. I got the IPD belt kit and am either at the point of reassembly or opening another can o worms.
Spinning the water pump by hand, I don’t feel any lateral play in the shaft or see any leakage, but rotating it does feel “notchy” (smooth, but like 6 or so defined “notches” through its rotation)
Is this a sign of bad bearings or just how it be after 123k miles and/or with coolant in the system?
Not an uncommon scenario. The 3.2 pumps don’t last as long as the 2.3/2.4/2.5 5-cylinder Volvo engines’ pumps do. So a little over 100k miles means it’s either gone, going, or packing its bags.
But a common theme pops up when it’s time to choose the new water pump brand. MVS Contributor Oragex has some sage advice:
“Do not touch any chinese pump brand…”
This is just a warning echoed more than once here at MVS Forums. Be careful what parts you buy for your Volvo. That doesn’t mean every little thing has to come from the dealer, but rather important parts should be carefully considered.
