S80 Bulb Failure Position Light

First got this message a couple of days ago when I started the car: Bulb Failure Position Light.

Not a big deal, but I checked all the lights and everything was on.
(Off the topic, love to get the headlights to stay off!)
I’m sure it’s probably a resistance issue kicking a false alarm, but I don’t feel like pulling all the bulbs out.
The big problem is that I just don’t know what Volvo calls a “position indicator”
Nothing in the owners manual (not surprising), and I’m still downloading the VADIS software, seems like that’s going to take another day or so.

Any ideas?

It can be one of the “parking/tail” lights. Sometimes they burn out – other times the connections corrode and resistance builds up at the base of the bulb. Rarely the socket will crack causing a loose connection. Here’s how to change them out:

  1. Switch off the ignition.
  2. Open the hood.
  3. Press down the retaining catch with a screwdriver and pull out the lamp housing.
  4. Press the retaining spring downward and pull the connector out of the lamp housing.
  5. Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise and remove it.
  6. Remove the defective bulb from the holder by first pressing it in slightly and then turning it counterclockwise.
  7. Install a new bulb in the holder and reinsert

The bulbs are located in two separate holders, an upper and a lower one. Each holder has a retaining catch.

To replace a bulb in the upper holder:

· Disconnect the wiring from the bulb holder.
· Press the retaining catch upward to release the lower part of the holder.
· Press the retaining catch downward to release the upper part of the holder.
· Replace the defective bulb.
· Press the bulb holder back into place.
· Reconnect the wiring.
· Fold up and close the covering panel.

To replace a bulb in the lower holder:

· Disconnect the wiring from the bulb holder.
· Press the retaining catch toward the outside of the car to release the holder.
· Replace the defective bulb.
· Press the bulb holder back into place.
· Reconnect the wiring.
· Fold up and close the covering panel.
