MVS Forums member and Contributor Rick overcomes, in no particular order, axle differences, mystery leftover connectors, fan control module incompatibility, a too-tall airbox, ride height issues, and much more. It’s not done, but the V8 has been run. Latest update is Rick has backburnered this for the time being.
RickHaleParker » Went parts picking today at LKQ. Pick up the Power steering return line for $9.00, $380 at FCP. Pair of Sachs 544046 struts for $54.00, $320 at FCP. Struts are not new but they look like they are low miles.
Almost ready to start putting it back together.
1. Install new Firewall heat shield.
2. Source transmission hydraulic lines.
3. Reassemble subframe assembly.
4. Install subframe assembly in engine bay.
RickHaleParker » I will need to redo everything on the HS CAN. Volvo changed the data rate from 250Kbps to 500 Kbps in 2005.
I do not think I will need to redo the LS CAN. Everything I seen so far indicates the LS CAN will be compatible with a CEM-L. The LS modules I looked at so far are the same. Both the 2004 S60R and the 2006 XC90 have the same REM. AEM. I pretty sure CCM, DDM, PDM, PSM, SRS, SWM and UEM are compatible.
Still need to look into Serial, LIN and MOST.
I’ll get a better idea what it going to take when I start digging into the dash.
yagger » I see 2 correct ways to realize this crazy project:
1. Swap everything from donor XC90 V8 to S60… it it very easy way, and it is really working way )))
2. Extract firmware from both CEMs (from CEM xc90 V8 and from CEM S60), disassemble them, figure out how to work any procedures for both, and transfer part of procedures from V8 CEM to other kind of MCU and combine it to 2006 CEM firmware. If you able to do it, you are really high level professional in reverse engineering direction. ))
RickHaleParker » Ah shoot! Did I forget to grab something else when I got the Engine and Transmission? Two One connectors and so have not found anyplace they go to.
Edit: Black is MAF.
RickHaleParker » The slim fan can in yesterday.
Options:
1. I could mount it on the back side of the Radiator but there would be only 1/2″ of clearance between the fan motor and the exhaust manifold. Don’t think the fan motor could take the heat.
2. I could mount the fan on the front side of the Radiator. Will require about 1.75″ of stand off spacers in addition to the XC90 frame spacer. That will leave about 1/2″ between the AC condenser and the back side of the bumper. Would be a good idea to find something to fill the void between the XC90 frame spacer and AC condenser.
The frame spacer is to fill the space where a intercooler would be on a XC90. If I could get my hands on a second one I could double stack them and forgo the standoff spacers. The only other one that I know of is 3 hours away in Oklahoma City OK. It was on the XC90 the engine and transmission came from. I may or may not still be there. I’m not inclined to do six hours of driving to find out.
RickHaleParker » Thought I had the front drive dealt with. Order a left and right axles for a 2006 – 2007 S60R/V70R. Each from different eBay vendors.
The right side fits.
The left side the spines on the transmission are too small but are the same as the right side. Checking reviled the 2007 XC90 TF80SC does have different spine diameters left to right. I have narrowed it down to two possibilities.
? The left axle I got off eBay is not the correct axle for a 2006 – 2007 S60R/V70R.
? There is a difference in left spine diameter. between the TF80SC used in a 2007 XC90 V8 and the TF80SC used in a 2006 – 2007 S60R/V70R.
I am inclined to think it is #1. When I google P30783090 it keeps coming up 2006-2008 V70 D4 or D5. I think these did come with a TC80SC. Perhaps some in Europe can access a better parts cross reference.
Anybody have the left drive axle for a 2006-2007 S60R/V70R laying around? If so could you measure the diameter of the spines on the transmission side. The vendor could be mistaken? The axle might be for a M66 manual not a TF80SC?
RickHaleParker » With the exceptions of Headlight wiring, Radiator fan wiring, Fog lights, Cold Air Intake and a Power Steering line that needs spliced. It done from the firewall forward.
The headlight wiring threw me a curve. Had it all figured out on paper. Went to do it and the colors on the S60 side do not match the S60 EWD. Tried to do it by connector pinout. There are two connectors that are not in the EWD. I am thinking get the headlights from a 2005 – 2008 S60. They are a better match for the wiring, connectors and a CEM-L.
Hood closes.
RickHaleParker » Fabricated the dash to fit the Audio center from the XC90.
This will gain me Phone Bluetooth, Satellite radio and Parking assist. Still need to do the detailing but it is in.
RickHaleParker » Progress. Today Yagger programed the new keys and remotes. Synced the CEM with the ECM. The engine fired up and ran for the first time in my possession. Did it over a Verizon wireless mobile hotspot.
