2005 S40 Cabin Air Filter Replacement
buddyjim » Well…..this weekend I replaced the cabin air filter on my 2005 S40 2.4i. I can honestly say it was one of the more difficult things I have done to my car due to the lack of room to maneuver & the @#$%^ lock nuts that hold the gas pedal on.
The most important piece of advice I can give you is to lay a blanket or a small pillow on the driver seat rail base (door side) so it doesn’t dig into your ribs. It still hurts after 2 days.
I also recommend replacing the lock nuts with non-lock nuts. Getting to the top 2 lock nuts & putting them back on was difficult.
This is a 15k mile recommended maintenance item.

2001 S40 CABIN AIR FILTER Replacement
S40Tex » Well i know where it is on a 2001 S40. it’s really quite simple to find.
On the 2001, it’s located directly under the glove compartment on the passenger side. There are two screws holding the cloth cover material on on the underside of the glove compartment. Remove those 2 screws and take the material off. You will see a long, narrow piece of plastic running parallel to the length of the car. I think there may be only one screw holding the cover piece in. Once you remove the screw, the piece holding the cabin air filter in should just slip off. Once off, the CAF should just slide out. Remember to make note of which side is dirty and make sure you put in the new CAF facing the right direction for air flow purposes. Reverse steps to put it all back together.

Wow! Did they change the car that much? I recently did my 2002 S40 and it was quite possibly the easiest thing to do ever. I am sorry you had to go through all that. And sorrier still that Volvo felt they had to change a good thing. If something needs to be changed that often should it not be a lot easier. Volvo seems to be a company who will listen to its customers feedback. I would give them a call.
