Need some Fluid Change info?
MVS Forum user Tiny Tim 077 has some maintenance questions about his XC90‘s AWD system. Forum members happily provided some answers.
jimmy57 » The diff has one oil and the AWD coupling unit (Volvo calls it Active On-demand Coupling, AOC. It is made by Haldex and is often called that name) that goes in the casing in front uses a unique oil that to my knowledge has no equivalent. That GM gearbox T6 has the angle gear that can use the 75W90 Redline.
Transmission uses D-III. Synthetic D-III would be a great thing to use but does cost more.
XVTer » A bit of a late reply, but I just did the driveline fluids on my wife’s XC90 so I figured I would share what I learned.
I am a big AMSOIL fan, but honestly, with the cost of replacing these components, I thought it wise to just go with the specified Volvo fluids where there wasn’t an AMSOIL product recommended. For $100 in fluids, it’s a good piece of mind in my opinion.
Note that with the T6 AWD (on my wife’s 2004, anyway), it’s got a chain driven angle gear up front; from what I understand this was to save on space. What this means is that there are 4 different places for fluid to go AFTER the transmission.
For the transmission, I just use full-synthetic AMSOIL multi-vehicle ATF. The spec for the transmission is D-IIIG for the GM-based tranny. I typically drain/fill the transmission every other oil change (~4-5qts). My hope is that it will prolong the transmission life, though it could just be a waste of money.
These are the driveline fluids I used:
Angle Gear Chain Drive Fluid: Volvo P/N: 1161745 [API GL-4 75W-80]
Bevel Gear Fluid (Front Angle Gear): Volvo P/N: 31259380 [API GL-5 75W-90]
Haldex Fluid (Contraption In Front of Rear Axle): [unsure on P/N]
Rear Differential (Rear Axle Housing): Volvo P/N: 1161620 [API GL-5 80W]
The oil for the front bevel gear was a rediculous $40/liter (at least you only need one), the rest of them were around $20-25/L IIRC.

About the XC90
The Volvo XC90 is a full-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo’s Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend‘s SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
