1998 Volvo v70 xc – awd fuel pump Fix

My 17 year old son has been drive my wife’s former 1998 Volvo v70 xc. The other day he started the engine and it ran for about 10 seconds. The engine then stalled. He restarted the engine and it again stalled after about 10 seconds. After the engine would turn over very well but would not start. We checked for a spark off the coil wire into the distributor cap and got a good spark.

XC70 fuel pump access instructions without removing the fuel tank.

Problem

Can’t figure out how to get the fuel lines and the wire connectors off the tank. The fuel lines (pretty rusty) seem to have some kind of push/slide lock, but the outer part of the fitting on the lines doesn’t seem to be separate or movable. The rubber hoses are on pretty tight.

Welcome to MVS,

The hoses don’t come off of the fuel lines, the connectors disconnect but it is a bear, particularly if they are as rusty and corroded as yours appear to be.

There are some tips and tricks in this thread from the repair database.

I would suggest hitting them with PB Blaster to loosen them up a bit, and this: Fuel Pump Fix Made Easy.

Here are the picture files. It worked great! A few small lessons along the way but overall much better than dropping the rear end.

I found this information to be very helpful. I’m including photos of my experience which will hopefully help you if you decide to replace your own pump.

Remove the seat and pull back the carpet and insulation pad.Pull back the carpet and paddingMark the location where you plan to cut the access panel. (look under the car and note the location on the fuel lines and electrical wires.Mark the location of where you plan to cut. Before cutting, remove the 12mm fuel tank strap bolt. This will allow the tank to drop down 2 inches and allow more clearance between the fuel line and floor board.Remove 12mm bolt to allow tank to drop down. I used a scissor jack, however it is not needed.Note the added clearance with the tank strap removed. I used an old license plate and wedged it between the fuel lines and floor board before cutting.Even with the small added clearance the lines are only 1/2 -3/4 of an inch from the floor board. Be careful when cutting.I used a 1/8 drill bit to create a pilot hole and hand cut only 3 sides of the floor board using a mini hacksaw blade. Took longer, however I frequently checked to see where I was cutting using caution around the fuel lines.

Metal blade pulled the panel open and used duct tape on the sharp edges before performing surgery.Pump access panel now open leaving the top portion connected.I had to cut the electrical wires at the pump and marked the white fuel sending unit wires to ensure proper reconnection.
The fuel lines were a pain to get off the pump unit. It is tricky and requires knowledge of how to remove a quick connector type fitting. Take your time and don’t force it.

1998 Volvo v70 xc – awd fuel pump issue?

Bonus! More on The Volvo XC70

At its introduction, the second generation V70 XC received a major upgrade. It featured better ground clearance of 8.2 in (210 mm) thanks to a raised suspension, different bodywork with unpainted bumpers and fender extensions, and AWD as standard. An interior grab handle for the front passenger was installed only on this model. Early V70 XC featured special rear view mirrors, a feature that was discontinued after 2003.

Engine and gearbox choices were limited. Only the 2.5L low pressure turbo, or the D5 diesel engine with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission were available. No diesel version was offered for the North American market.

For 2003 the model was renamed the XC70, in keeping with Volvo’s newly introduced XC90

I’ve taken the pump out, but when I pulled the fuel lines off the pump, the set of clips that hold the lines to the pump were bent and/or broken. Where do I get new clips so I can attach the lines back to the new pump?
